How to Make a Hat Out of Paper Easy
Paper hats are so simple to make and really fun to wear! With just 5 minutes and 2 sheets of construction paper, you can fold a cute hat to wear for dress up play, parties or costumes.

How to Make a Paper Hat Tutorial
Folding a paper hat is easy! It's a simple craft project for both kids and adults.
- 2 sheets construction paper (9 x 12 inch, any color)

Tape (invisible or transparent)
Step 1: Tape together 2 sheets of paper

Line up the long edges of 2 sheets of construction paper and add a line of tape (on one side only). The tape will be hidden on the inside of the hat, so it doesn't need to be perfect.
Step 2: Fold the paper hat

Fold the paper in half lengthwise, then open it up again. Then fold it width-wise, as shown in the photo.

Rotate the paper as shown in the photo, so that the fold is at the top.

Take each of the top corners and fold them downwards so that the edges line up with the center fold.

Take one layer of the bottom flap and fold it upwards.

Flip the folded paper over. Take the remaining bottom flap and fold it upwards.

Pick up the paper hat and place your thumbs into the opening at the bottom. Pull the two sides apart slightly to make an opening for your head.

Your paper hat can be complete at this point. Or...
Step 3: (Optional) Add string

If the hat isn't staying on your head, you can add string that you can tie under your chin to help keep it in place.
Use a single hole punch to make 2 holes on one side of the bottom of the hat. Tie a piece of 12 inch long string through each hole.

Your paper hat is complete!
How big does the paper need to be?
We taped together 2 sheets of 9 inch by 12 inch construction paper, so the total size was 18 inches by 12 inches. If you're using newspaper, use one large unfolded sheet of newspaper.
You could also tape together 2 sheets of letter sized paper (8.5 inch by 11 inch). Tabloid paper (11 inch by 17 inch) would work really well as well.
Will the paper hat fit on a child?
Using 2 sheets of construction paper, our hat was big enough to fit on my 5 year old's head. (As well as the heads of several stuffed animals).
To make a hat that fits an older child or adult, use a large sheet of newspaper instead. Or you can follow the instructions above and simply add string to the hat so it stays on their head.
What kind of paper do you need to make a paper hat?
You can use construction paper, colored printer paper or newspaper to make a paper hat. You will need to tape together 2 sheets of construction paper or printer paper to make a hat big enough to fit on your head.
Can I use a single sheet of paper to make a paper hat?
You can use 1 sheet of printer paper to make a hat using the same directions as shown above. However, the paper hat will be quite small and will only fit on small toys and stuffed animals.
My 8 and 10 year olds were able to make their hats all by themselves, but my 5 year old needed a little help. They had so much fun making (and playing with) these hats!
They made one for themselves and a matching hat for their favourite stuffed animals. Such a fun kids craft for a rainy day!
